Random Name Picker

Pick students or teammates at random, with no repeats until everyone has had a turn.

Who’s next?

Tap, drag or flick the wheel to spin · or press Ctrl + Enter

Load your class list once, use it all term

  1. Copy the name column from your gradebook, roster spreadsheet or Google Classroom export and paste it into the box. Every name becomes a chip.
  2. Tap anyone who is absent today. Their chip is crossed out and they’re left off the wheel, but they stay in the list for tomorrow.
  3. Spin. This page starts in elimination mode, so each picked student sits out from the next spin and nobody gets called twice until everyone has had a turn.
  4. When the wheel is down to the last name, press Everyone back to start a fresh round.

Why teachers use a name wheel

Cold-calling from memory tends to favor the same few hands. A visible random spin shows students the pick is fair, and because everyone knows they could be next, more of the room stays ready to answer.

The wheel saves your roster in your own browser, so you can open the page next lesson and it’s already there. Different classes? Use the share link to keep one link per class in your planner.

Classroom routines that work with it

  • Exit ticket reader: spin three names at the end of class to read their answers aloud.
  • Job board: fill line leader, door holder and supply helper each week. Elimination mode spreads the jobs around.
  • Group roles: spin once per group for the reporter, so the strongest speaker isn’t always the default.
  • Warm-up questions: a second wheel of question numbers, made on the number spinner, pairs a random student with a random question.
  • Projector mode: full screen shows only the wheel. Sound and long spins build suspense, and a 2-second spin keeps things moving.

Arisan spin wheel draws

An arisan is a rotating savings group: everyone pays in each meeting, and one member takes home the pot. Elimination mode fits it exactly. Load every member once, spin at each meeting, and the winner sits out until every member has had a turn. Then Everyone back starts the next cycle.

The wheel remembers who has already won on the device you use, and the History tab keeps the date and time of each draw, so the treasurer can download it as a CSV for the group record. Spin with the screen shared on a video call, or in full screen at the meeting, so every member sees the draw happen.

Student privacy

Names you type stay in your browser’s local storage and are never sent to our server, and there are no accounts. A share link holds the names inside the link itself, so only share it with people who should see the roster. To use initials or numbers instead of names, type them as entries.

Questions people ask

How do I stop the same student being picked twice?

This page already uses elimination mode: each picked name sits out until you press Everyone back. On other wheels, turn it on under Options → After each spin.

Can I use it for an arisan draw?

Yes. Add every member, keep elimination mode on, and spin once per meeting. Winners sit out until everyone has received the pot, then press Everyone back for the next round.

How do I mark a student absent?

Tap the chip with their name. It turns grey with a line through it and skips today’s spins; tap it again when they’re back in class.

Can I paste names from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Copy the column and paste it into the entry box. Every line becomes a separate name. You can also import a .csv or .txt file.

Does it work on a Chromebook and a classroom projector?

Yes. It runs in any modern browser, works offline after the first visit, and has a full-screen mode for projectors and smartboards.
