Letter Spinner

Spin for a random letter A–Z for word games and phonics.

Tap, drag or flick the wheel to spin · or press Ctrl + Enter

Games that need a random letter

  • Scattergories-style categories: spin a letter, then everyone names a fruit, a city and a band starting with it before the timer runs out.
  • Stop / Tutti Frutti / Basta: the same idea, played with paper columns. The wheel replaces the “say the alphabet in your head” trick, which people can game.
  • Alphabet challenges: name an animal, a movie or a food from the letter. Elimination mode makes sure every letter gets played once.
  • Phonics warm-ups: spin for a letter and the class gives its sound and three words that start with it.
  • Random initials: spin twice for initials to name a story character or a team.

Which letter set to use

PresetBest for
A–Z (26 letters)Phonics, alphabet challenges, and anything where every letter should get a turn.
No Q X Z (23)Category games with older players. Removes the three letters fewest English words start with.
Party set (20)Fast party rounds. Also drops U, V and Y so every spin is easy to play.
Vowels (5)Early-reader vowel-sound practice and word-building games.
Consonants (21)Blending practice: pair with a vowel spin to build a syllable.

Play every letter once

This wheel starts in elimination mode, so a letter that’s been played sits out and the chips show what’s left. Press Everyone back to reset for a new game. Want letters to repeat? Switch to Keep the result in Options.

You can tap any letter chip to drop it for the session. To build your own set, choose Edit as text and type one letter per line.

Why some letters are hard to play

Far fewer English words start with Q, X and Z than with letters like S, C, P or T, which is why category games get stuck on them. Removing those three keeps a fast game moving. Removing U, V and Y as well, as the Party set does, means almost every category has easy answers for every spin.

For younger players, start with the full alphabet and let them call a quick swap on a hard letter. For competitive games, keep the hard letters and give double points for any valid answer on Q, X or Z.

Scoring a category round

  1. Agree on 6–10 categories, such as an animal, a country, a food, a name, a job and a movie.
  2. Spin the letter and start a 2-minute timer.
  3. Everyone writes one answer per category starting with that letter.
  4. Read the answers aloud. Score 1 point for a valid answer and 0 for any answer someone else also wrote, so original answers win.
  5. Spin again. Elimination mode keeps the letter from repeating within a game.

A five-minute phonics routine

  • Sound it: spin a letter and the class says its sound together.
  • Find three: pairs list three words that start with that sound.
  • Blend it: spin a consonant, then a vowel, and read the two-letter blend.
  • Write it: everyone writes the letter in upper and lower case.

Questions people ask

How do I get a random letter?

Press Spin. Each letter on the wheel has an equal chance, so 1 in 26 with the full alphabet.

Can I remove hard letters like Q and X?

Yes. Use the “No Q X Z” or “Party set” preset, or tap any letter chip to sit it out.

Will the same letter come up twice?

Not on this page by default. Elimination mode sits each letter out until you press Everyone back.

Which letters should I remove for Scattergories?

Most groups remove Q, X and Z. Some also remove U, V and Y, which the Party set preset does in one click.

Can I spin for a vowel and a consonant separately?

Yes. Load Vowels or Consonants as presets, or use the double spin wheel with consonants on one side and vowels on the other.
